Dear Honourable Prime Minister,

I feel deeply annoyed, humiliated, inconvenienced, distressed and anxious about your using the word "cholo" or "tiolo" to denigrate and insult honourable Shakeel Mohamed for his posting of a video showing leakages in the roof of the National Assembly together with his comments.

You obviously know, as all Mauritians do, the denigrating, insulting, calumnious and defaming nature of that word which, in the Creole language, has since time immemorial, been meant to mean, in the eyes of racist individuals, the lowest class of our citizens of African origin who, despite all ostracism, played, sang and danced the sega. And you very well know that this vilifying adjective is still used to denigrate, insult and belittle people. And that is why you purposely used it to qualify Mr. Shakeel Mohamed. In consequence, I would urge you to withdraw this vile word and to present your official public excuses to our citizens of African origin.

I would also seize this occasion to tell you how anxious I feel, and I am sure many other Mauritians feel the same, that while addressing a socio-religious-cultural gathering a few days ago, you said that the opposition is trying to provoke "enn lager kominal" by their claims. I would not herein comment about the legitimacy, or not, of their claims, but I find it dangerous, for you, PM of a multi-cultural democracy, to hold such opinion, and irresponsible, divisive and inflammatory, to voice it out before such an audience.

I thank you and trust you will do the needful at your earliest convenience so that our lovely rainbow nation, despite our differences and competing interests, can continue to live in peace, justice and liberty. We, citizens of the Republic of Mauritius are mature enough to share with each other and live together. It's however unfortunate and annoying that, oftentimes, politicians seem to be incapable to digest same.
