[Paul Lismore] Once upon a time, in La La Land...

In 1896, an islander told the visitor Mark Twain that "Mauritius was made first and then heaven; and heaven was copied after Mauritius."

If Mark Twain were to visit Mauritius now, he would no doubt meet islanders who will tell him that Heaven has been taken over by the devil and its various spawns, and that paradise is now awash with all sorts of drugs which are killing and incapacitating so many of its citizens.

The devil got a foothold on the island in the eighties when the island was not only flooded with heroin but the Prime Minister of the day admitted in public that drug dealers used to bring to his house huge amounts of money in large bags known as "tant". Even when 4 of his MLAs were arrested in Amsterdam airport with 44 kgs of heroin in their bags, guess what the electorate, otherwise known as Lepep Admirab, did the following year? They voted the devil and his supporters back to power, in order to presumably give the island its own version of the Satanic Verses...

Hard drugs continued to ravage the island, and the situation became worse when the Devil got back in power in 2014. Where previous raids were described by zourlanus as valuing millions of rupees, they now talk about billions of rupees worth of drugs....The Devil made sure through its corrupt police and various other corrupt institutions that the big time dealers were never caught, because it became apparent that Lepep admirab was happy with stories of small fish being caught and condemned to imprisonment.

In 1986, the Devil instituted a "commission d'enquete" on drugs under the chairmanship of Judge Roti. Predictably, nothing of any great value followed this waste of public time and money.

In November 2015, the Devil appointed Judge Paul Lam Manz Tou to chair another Commission d'enquete on drugs. As usual, the zourlanus came up with all sorts of sensationalist nonsense, but the cynics amongst the population knew that nothing, absolutely nothing constructive or positive would follow from that Commission too. The commissions' report consisted of 260 pages which continue to gather dust deep in the Devil's den. Now and then, the only thing that we hear about this Commission is some corrupt zavoka telling us how he is really a saint and how he does not even take the occasional aspirin, never mind being substantially bribed by big time drug dealers...

Paul Manz Tou asked for Rs 18 millions of our money as reward for his 'sterling' work in chairing that useless commission. Never mind that during the hearings, one of the most notorious drug dealers currently in prison accused the devil himself of being behind most drug transactions. A real judge would have ordered the Devil to come and explain himself, but eh! This is La La Land...

This week, we heard how the Supreme Court washed, laundered and attempted to make Raouf Woof Woof Gulbulitis smell nice, by expunging 6 pages of the Commission's Report that purported to show how he loved the company (and money) of big time drug dealers. One has to express nothing but consternation that Judge Paul Manz Tou was not aware of a basic principle of natural justice: audi alteram partem, which loosely translated means " no person shall be condemned, punished or have any property or legal right compromised by a court of law without having heard that person." Woof Woof was not allowed to question any of the witnesses making all sorts of accusations against him, and the Supreme Court has rightly thrown out the evidence against him.

What about Paul Manz Tou? He always had the reputation (created by zourlanus, of course) that he was as pure as the driven snow and that he was a no nonsense man. No one mentioned how lawyers like Maximilius Sauzieritis and his brown alter ego Jaykar Sauzierits, sorry Gada,  used to have their plaints/affidavits vetted by Manz Tou. a price agreed, and then the plaints will be heard, in their favour, of course....

One would have thought that a commission of inquiry on drugs would want to hear the lawyer who deals with most of these cases, Gavinius Gloveritis, but Manz tou chose not to call him...Nor did he call those zavokas who make daily visits to his Law Unsure chambers...

Last but not least, why didn't manz tou call a notorious money launderer in charge of one of the biggest money exchange bureaus on the island? Is it because Ramen SawmiGonaden is a bosom pal of that symbol of probity and clean living, Rakesh Gooldiarrhee, who happens to be a client of Manz Tou?

The icing on the cake? La cuisine has been doing its best to get Woof Woof the Senior counsel title that he desperately craves, perhaps to compensate for his short stature. They tried it when Matadeen was Chief Judge, but the latter, much to his credit, refused. As Woof Woof's wife will be Chief Judge soon, it will look bad if she promotes her husband, so enormous pressure is being put on the current Chief Judge of la cuisine to promote his brother in arms...

Yes, the silent Chief Judge Ashraf Can'tdo might come to Woof Woof's rescue....

You think that scenario is implausible? Eoula! This is La Land where the improbable happens as a daily occurrence. Heaven is now in the hands of the devil who was accused of being behind most major drugs deals and which the Judge in charge of the Commission of Inquiry on drugs chose to ignore...

La La Land...where the dregs of humanity, those who have sold their souls to the Devil, have the temerity to tell us that they are "patriots"...
