1/ Sud Afrik ena Nelson Mandela, the greatest African of the 20th century, a symbol of dignity, charm, statesmanship, and a real rassenbleur. He remains one of history's most inspirational figures. He is one of my three heroes in life, the other two being the G.O.A.T. Muhammad Ali, and the greatest singer in India, Mohammed Rafi.
Some of his famous sayings:
a/ "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."
b/ "No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite."
c/ Something that our politicians, chatwas, and attention/'like' seekers will never understand: " There can be no greater gift than that of giving one’s time and energy to help others without expecting anything in return."
d/ " Poverty is not an accident. Like slavery and apartheid, it is man-made and can be removed by the actions of human beings."
e/ My favourite, his speech from the dock in the Rivonia trial in 1964, which ends with: "During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die."
